As I was growing up the thought of reading disgusted me. Being a Gen Y, I’m very often caught up by the most modern technology and just craving the convenience of everything done immediately. Why read a book when a film could tell you the identical story without the inconvenience of having to use your brain? Take as an example The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. You can’t say to me that the book was better than the movies. Then again, if I actually read the books, I might be able to a make a qualified opinion (Whoops). If you are bored and had 2 hours spare, playing a video game was definitely going to pass time a lot quicker than attempting to read a book. Travelling on the bus no longer was tiresome just staring at people once I got Yoshi’s Island on the DS. Time flew and public transport rides to work actually enjoyable.

Nonetheless in hindsight, if I had my time again, I would probably take note of my mom’s nagging and at her insistence, read. Why? Because knowledge is essential to everything, especially when it comes to creating business on the Web. Without knowledge, you lack the understanding of the industry. You fail to pick up trends and in an instant you are behind all your competitors. Business on the Internet requires skill and adaptability. If you don’t adapt to your current environment, expect to fall short. There has been so much that I have learnt over the past year in undertaking to do a business online. And without doubt, if I had my time again, I would alter a lot around what I’ve been doing. It’s just that sometimes old habits die hard. You don’t realise the amount of time invested into the business equates basically to another job. The less time you spend with your friends and family trying to make the business work and time just gets by you. Efficiency in your processes is another key to victory because success is not necessarily determined by revenue alone, though it is a big part. Time is the other key determinent to success. If you get to spend more time doing what you love at the same time as maintaining a sustainable income, that is success.

So basically I’ve started to take observe of emails that I’ve signed up to, showing me how to succeed. I’ve read more and more on the technology section of the paper to gain a better grasp of the industry I’m in. I read news article and testimony after testimony on the Net to give me the edge on my rivals. And where has that got me? Well I believe the work and knowledge I have gained is starting to bear fruit and shape the way I look at the world. I am currently on the first page of Google for the highly competitive key words free stuff. I intend to push that ranking to number 5 in the next 6 months. Is it possible? Oh yes, by heeding the advice of others that have gone before me, I am able to mimic and expand on what has been done. Success is within my grasp, I can almost feel it. But in the meantime, I need to pick up the technology magazine subscription that’s sitting next to me and get reading!
